A family site that is easy to browse, even on a phone
Nyshporka has long been able to build a site from your family tree: a page for every person, family, place and source. But the tree on it mixed up generations: husband and wife ended up in different rows, lines came loose from the cards, and on a phone the whole tree shrank to unreadable dots. To look at the site you had to run a separate command in the terminal.
In 0.33.0 the site has been made anew.
A tree around a person
The tree is now built from one person, as in a paper pedigree:
- ancestors go up, as many generations as you like;
- children and grandchildren go down, under each marriage separately;
- the husband or wife stands alongside, in the same row; several marriages go on both sides;
- brothers and sisters stand to the side, the elder on the left, the younger on the right.
Tap a card to see who this is, their parents and children, and a link to the person's page. Tap again and the tree is rebuilt around them. A person who appears in the family tree twice (for example, when relatives married each other) is shown with the mark “already in the tree”, not as a second copy of the branch.
You can send relatives the address of the tree with the right person in the centre, and the browser's “back” button returns to the previous person.
The person page
- At the top: the name, years of life, where they were born and where they died, and a “Show in the tree” button.
- The family as cards: parents, each marriage with its children, brothers and sisters. Hypothetical links stand apart and are marked “not verified by a source”.
- Life in order: baptism, marriages, service, moves, death, each event with a place and a link to the source.
- Documents as a grid of crops. Tap to open full screen.
Hypotheses are on the site too
Everything unproven about the family now has its own page: what exactly is claimed, what it rests on, which document will settle it, and what has already been decided. A person's page shows the hypotheses about them. Next to a disputed fact in their life there is a link to the hypothesis it depends on.
Search, map, graph, and the phone
- Search for a person on the home page: start typing a name or a year.
- The map of places shows who was born, served and lived where. On a phone the list of places slides up from the bottom.
- The graph of links shows the whole family on one canvas. The year slider keeps those who were alive then.
- Everything works with your fingers: dragging, zooming, a details sheet from the bottom. There is a light and a dark theme.
In seven languages
The site is built in Ukrainian, English, Polish, Romanian, French, German and Russian. The language switcher sits in the header and keeps you on the same page. Everything around the data is translated: the menu, headings, event names, dates, the tree and the map. Names, facts and notes stay as they are written in the family tree. Relatives abroad open the site in their own language.
Don't need all the languages? Keep only yours in the site settings: each language is built separately, so the fewer languages, the faster a large family tree is built.
The public site, without the living
Nyshporka checks the public version, the one you can put on the internet, by itself. The living and those whose closest relatives are alive are not there: no pages, no names in the tree, no scans, no hypotheses about them. If such a person's name has stayed somewhere in the text, the site will not be built, and Nyshporka will show exactly where.
Build and open it from Nyshporka
The app has a new section, “Research → Family site”. It shows when the site was built and how many people it has, and says so separately if the family tree has grown since. The “Rebuild” button builds the site in a few minutes, and “Open the site” shows it right in the browser. You no longer need the terminal for this.
A second shortcut appears on the desktop, “Family site”. It opens your site at once, and if Nyshporka is already running, it simply opens a new tab.
What else has changed
- Search within one file. On the “Search” screen the “Where” field is now a list: fonds, inventories and files with the title, years, village and how many pages have already been read. The chosen file is shown on the button, and the cross brings the search back to the whole library. You no longer have to go through the library for this.
- “Overview” opens in half a second, not in 15. Nyshporka first shows the last known state and finishes counting the fresh one by itself.
- The logo in the app leads to the nyshporka.online portal.
How to update
nysh update, or ask your assistant to update Nyshporka. After the update, rebuild the site: “Research → Family site → Rebuild”. The old site refers to files that the new version no longer has.
